Orthodontics for children aged 6 to 9 years old

What is interceptive and preventive orthodontics exactly ?

Interceptive and preventive orthodontics is the sum off all orthodontic solutions available for children aged 6 to 9 years old to help stop the appearance or aggravation of dysmorphia.

This early stage of treatment allows the orthodontist to properly align the jaws and teeth before any further complications arise needlessly.

Interceptive treatment

The interceptive treatment is the first correction in a child’s orthodontic treatment. Dentofacial orthopaedics, to be more precise, intends to correct the imbalance of the jaw’s positions in order to optimize the occlusion.

Preventive treatment

A preventive treatment is recommended to avoid and stop the appearance of any abnormality in the alignment of the teeth before it could do any damage.

When is the right time for a first visit to the orthodontist ?

It is usually your paediatric dentist that will recommend you an interceptive and preventive treatment.

However it is not always recommended to start an orthodontic treatment early as some malocclusions are easier to correct during puberty. We will then ensure a follow up until it is time to take action.

What are the warning signs that you should be looking for ?

The front teeth don’t touch when your mouth is closed.

A difference of length between the upper and lower jaw.

Premature loss of the milk teeth (baby teeth) creating a lack of space for the permanent teeth (adult teeth).

A movement of the front incisors or a deformation of the jaw due to thumb sucking.

What are
the benefits ?

Taking care of the alignment of the teeth for young children is important in order to treat the malocclusion early and reduce the risk of a complicated treatment during puberty.

Preventive orthodontics allows a better control of the gap created by the loss of the first teeth. Children can wear dental appliances called “space holder” to allow the permanent teeth to grow correctly.

  • Step 1 : the diagnosis

We will realise a first diagnosis during the first visit with the help of x-rays and dental impressions to know if a treatment is required.

According to the results the practitioner will decide if a treatment is required or not. A treatment plan will be provided according to the results.

  • Step 2 : fitting of the dental appliance

The treatment starts with the orthodontist fitting the dental appliance.

  • Step 3 : Monthly visits

The visits are usually scheduled every 4 to 6 weeks and will last for 6 to 9 months depending of the type of malocclusion that was diagnosed.

The interceptive treatment is a short first phase of treatment to solve a specific issue but is not a treatment strictly speaking.

The preventive and interceptive treatment is recommended in the following cases:

  • Open bites

Open bites due to thumb sucking or tongue thrusting.

  • Crowded teeth

Crowded teeth and lack of space due to abnormal growth jaws.

  • Under- over- or crossbite

Upper and lower jaws are not in the right position for a good occlusion due to a lack of growth.

The treatment is not painful. However it is normal to feel some minor discomfort for a few days.

  • 700€ for a 6months period.
  • 1.050€ for a 9months period.
